Since 2005, I have guided countless individuals on their journey to somatic well-being, primarily utilising Focusing, as developed by Dr. Eugene Gendlin. This gentle, couch-based method invites you to enter a relaxed, receptive state, where we turn inward to explore the subtle, often pre-verbal sensations within your body – what Gendlin termed the “felt sense.” This is not about intellectual analysis, but rather a direct, experiential dialogue with your body’s inherent wisdom. Clients consistently report that a single session can yield more profound insights into their issues than many traditional counselling sessions combined, often leading to a significant “felt shift” and a new sense of clarity and spaciousness.
The Science Behind the Release:
Our bodies are remarkable vessels, capable of storing not just physical tension, but also the unresolved residue of stress, anxiety, and trauma. This isn’t merely anecdotal; the cutting-edge fields of neurobiology and Polyvagal Theory illuminate how our autonomic nervous system can become dysregulated, leaving us stuck in states of chronic fight, flight, or freeze. Somatic Release works with this physiological reality, helping to gently unwind these “stuck” patterns.
To further support this re-regulation, I seamlessly integrate Trauma Release Exercises (TRE®). Developed by Dr. David Berceli, TRE® is a set of simple exercises that safely activate the body’s natural reflex of shaking or vibrating. This neurogenic tremor, a built-in biological mechanism observed across mammals, helps to discharge deep muscular tension and calm the nervous system. By safely allowing the body to “shake out” accumulated stress and residual activation, we facilitate the completion of the body’s natural stress-response cycle, promoting a more balanced and resilient nervous system. This process is deeply rooted in our evolutionary biology, offering a powerful, accessible route to release without needing to re-live traumatic events.
