Annette Cohen- Transpersonal and Holistic Therapy
I am a highly experienced and dedicated therapist with over two decades of practice, committed to guiding individuals toward enhanced well-being and personal effectiveness. Since 1999, I have consistently refined my expertise, integrating a diverse range of proven therapeutic modalities to deliver comprehensive client support.
I started my working life working in a legal environment, where I became increasingly interested in the psychological reports and the workings of the mind. During this time in my early 20’s I was hit with several traumatic events and hit a crossroads; do I continue my career in law, or do I work on my own healing journey and follow my passion into the workings of the human psyche?
My foundational training began with a unique mentorship under a Chinese physician, where I gained early insights into spinal reflexology and advanced energetic principles. This was followed by qualifications in Swedish massage, dream analysis and Usui Reiki, training to master level. Yoga practice at this stage of my healing had become fundamental to my well being and in 2005 I went to the International Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Centre in California to train to be a classical yoga teacher, focusing on meditation, energetic science, and advanced yogic philosophy training under Swami Sitaramananda and was appointed the Ashram dream analyst.
Upon returning to the UK, I continued my studies into Nadi Yoga (Sound Healing), with prominent figures such as Barbara Blakemore and Professor John Beaulieu, a pioneer in integrating this therapy into modern psychotherapy, notably working with psychiatrist R.D. Laing.
As my client work progressed, I recognised the growing need train more fully in the ethical handling of the therapeutic space; people were opening up and experiencing deep healings in session, so I gained further accreditation in counselling and life coaching in 2006/7. This progression deepened my offerings to clients in meditation and hypnotherapy/journey work, and introduced me to Dr. Gendlin’s Somatic Release work, a highly effective tool I continue to integrate into practice today.
During the lockdowns of Covid 19, I adapted an approach to online therapy, effectively assisting clients with complex musculoskeletal issues as they could not access physical support for issues such as slipped discs, guiding clients through remedial yoga postures to aid the bodies natural self alignment process.
.
Specialising in Trauma, Relationships, and Addictions
I have focused expertise in guiding clients through the complexities of trauma recovery, relational challenges, addiction recovery, parenting the neurodiverse, ADHD coaching and those who have been accused of false allegations or going through traumatic legal proceedings.
I have gained valuable experience working within hospice environments, cancer treatment centres, addiction rehabilitation facilities and professional sports.
My comprehensive skillset is built upon a profound foundation of established methodologies, including Coaching Modalities, CBT, Psychodynamic, Humanistic Counselling, Transpersonal Psychology and Transactional Analysis. This diverse framework allows me to address the intricate connections between mind, body, and spirit.
How can we release fear and learn to have faith in ourselves and the world around us again?
As mammals, we have an inbuilt mechanism for releasing trauma: shaking. Humans appear not to allow the process of letting go of emotional and nervous discharges that build up when under stress. This results in years of stored tension that needs to be released for optimal health and to be free of acting from those old stresses to current situations that do not match the events in hand. Displaced anger and rage, panic attacks, aggression, and addictions can all be symptomatic of unresolved tension.
I use Somatic Release and journey work to release stored tension and trauma, and journey work for targeted therapeutic outcomes. I noticed over the years that many of my clients needed more information about the Neuroscience of Emotional Processes before they could really get on board with the therapeutic work at hand. This has led me to continue my studies in this area.
Transpersonal Psychology and Transactional Analysis underpin my psychotherapy, which can be used for shorter impactful interventions and longer relational work for ongoing Post Traumatic Growth. The spiritual aspect of this work is a rebuilding of faith after one has experienced the depths of pain and fear.
When we overcome any issue, it always allows us to be of service to others. First is to build your resilience and awareness, and through that, find your authentic self through personal freedom.
